SUMMER
The Dogdays of summer; Bar-B-Que, Mosquito, and Vacation Season
Summer officially runs from June 21 to September 21 and unofficially from the Memorial Day to Labor Day and including Independence Day, which are all holidays that traditional include bar-b-ques. Technically what most people do for a bar-b-que is actually grilling where the difference is low heat for a long time versus high heat that chars the meat (so include items high in vitamin C on the menu to counteract the possible effects of any carcinogens).
Rather than being busy doing landscaping this is the time of year I'm often in an orchard since most of the fruits are ready for harvest starting with blueberries (although various cultivars extend the season through August) and blackberries, then apples for drying along with plums and peaches, and finally figs and muscadines, besides some scattered minor local fruit crops. Meanwhile in the garden the roasting ear are ready by if Independence day if the sweet corn was planted well before the average date of the last frost and got lucky. The list of other veggies is longer than will be included here, but both the fruits and vegetables can be seen in the edible plants list. It seems like most of the wildflower are small, white, and/or obscured by all the leaves. Perhaps the biggest display is from catalpa if you can tolerate the defoliation by the catalpa worms as well as the trees do; a bonus is that catalpa worms make one of the best fish baits. Trumpet creeper is another exception and it attracts lots of hummingbirds, but it can be weedy. Not surprisingly the months just seem to run together.
Other places I have been found in the summer include canoe camping, backpacking at Philmont Scout Ranch, vacation Bible school and other similar activities. Caves are also cool, literally since the temperature is at the annual average of 60oF, and this is the best time to see bats emerge each evening at Sauta Cave just off highway 72 west of Scottsboro, Alabama, besides the maternity/bachelor colonies in some other area caves.
