American wisteria, Wisteria frutenscens (L.) Poir., and Kentucky wisteria, W. macrostachys (Torr. & Gray) Nutt. ex BL Robins. & Fern., are often considered synonymous and either are native
alternatives to the invasive exotic Chinese wisteria, W. sinensis (Sims) DC., and Japanese wisteria, W. floribunda (Willd.) DC. Native wisteria is much less likely to spread beyond bounds and smother other vegetation
including trees. Wetlands are the preferred
habitat, but are not required. If there is a downside it may be that the native wisteria is not as hardy, but that in not a concern in Alabama.
