Mezeron Family, Thymelaeaceae:  Dirca L., leatherwood; Thymelaea passerina (L.) Coss. & Germ., mezereon

This family also contains the plant referred to as (lign) aloe in the Old Testament (Numbers 24:6, Psalm 45:8); the plant is Aquilaria agallocha, which is synonymous with A.
malaccensis Lamk., and is the source of agarwood.  Agarwood results from a fragrant resin produced in the heartwood in response to a fungal infection.  A legend associated with the tree is a that it originally came from a cutting/seedling brought from the Garden of Eden by Adam.
