There are two species of snowbell, American snowbell, S. americanus Lam., and big-leaf snowbell, Styrax grandifolius Ait., that are found in a few places around here.  Well at least in the later case it was true until an entire population was bulldozed by a camp ranger because the knee high shrubs were blocking a needless view of the lake, and that is beside also using the bulldozer to turn hiking trails into gullies, burning down a pavilion that might have only needed a new roof, but instead leaving useless metal supports, damaged stone fireplace, and no sign of the picnic tables, and his wife initially refused a job  as the kitchen manager, but later ordered pizza in order to undermine, and then replace the kitchen manger who was soon fired because this resulted food being wasted.  Fortunately that arse was only there for a year, but he was followed by a foul mouthed poacher then it became a volunteer positon, which often results in any landscaping efforts to be futile due to reckless use of mowers, string trimmers, and herbicides.  For similar reasons few people are allowed to use string trimmers along the Vernon Bush Trail at Jackson County Park.  Big-leaf snowbell is found in Buck’s Pocket State Park although those along the road to the primitive campground may not longer exist, while the largest specimen I have ever seen was lost due to a bridge replacement project.
