Planer-tree or water-elm, Planera aquatica J. F. Gmel.,  is an unusual tree in a monotypic genus of the elm family.  The most unusual thing about it is the fruit which has tentacle like protuberances or spines.  It would make an interesting specimen plant suitable for a wet area since it is an obligate wetland species.  The range is mostly in the coastal plain up to southeast North Carolina and up the Mississippi River Valley to Illinois where is is state listed as threatened.
