Gopher apple, Licania michauxii Prance, is one of the
neatest little shrubs I saw when I took a dendrology class. The name gopher apple is due to gopher tortoises eating them.
It is native to the lower coastal plain and
grows in colonies due to relatively large underground stems, but the individual
plants are only about half knee high. As
a result it is adapted to be very fire resistant, although not quite as frost resistant since it is hardy only to zone 8b. It is in the Chrysobalanaceae family that includes the reportedly eatable coco plum, Chrysobalanus icaco L., that is found only in south Florida due to it being even less tolerant of frost.
