Sand-myrtle, Leiophyllum buxifolium R. Hedw., is reported from 7 states, but it has an odd
range distribution that includes the New Jersey Pine Barrens, but is then disjunct to the Southern Appalachians mostly around the SmokyMountains, thus it is also being called a mountain-myrtle, and from there it is scattered to the Carolina coast. It is an evergreen shrub of a monotypic genus
in the heath family that includes blueberries (Vaccinium) and azaleas (Rhododendron).
