Fetterbush Eubotrys racemosa (L.) Nutt. is synonomous with L. racemosa similar to how Florida hobblebush, Agarista populifolia, is synonymous with Leucothoe populifolia, was initially collected by William Bartram under the name Andromeda formosissima, but as is often the case he is not credited with the discovery due to complications related to the American Revaluation. Florida hobblebush is also called pipestem because the stems are hollow. Pipestem is similar to fetterbush, Leucothoe fontanesiana, also known as highland doghobble, and sweetbells, L. axillaris, also known as coastal doghobble, while considering that it was initially in the same genus. The common name prefixes of hobble and fetter is due to the thickets they can form thus indicative that they would make great shrubs since also being evergreen. . They are all in the same family as azaleas (Rhododendron) and blueberries (Vaccinium).
