Loquat, Eriobotryajaponica (Thunb.) Lindl., is an evergreen subtropical fruit tree. It was originally from China but the specific epithet resulted from trees that were already naturalized in Japan, while it was first placed in the genus Mespilus L. along with meldar, Mespilusgermanica L., thus it is sometimes called Japanese meldar. They are both related to Amelanchier Medik., serviceberry. Loquat is only marginally hardy to zone 8, but due to flowering in the autumn and fruiting in the spring it rarely fruits successfully beyond zone 9 as well as in hotter and drier parts of the tropics thus it tends to be found at higher elevations near those areas.
