Trailing arbutus, Epigaea repens, was a victim of exploitation by serial wildflower diggers who would just go get another one every time the last one died as could be expected because trailing arbutus is extremely difficult to transplant successfully. Fortunately the populations of trailing arbutus have begun to recover unlike other species that are similarly vulnerable to exploitation. The reason for the covetous behavior are flowers with a delicate sweet fragrance that I seem unable to discern although I may be overly cautious due to a bumble bee nearly flying up my nose in an early attempt to smell the flowers, which requires a kneeling or even prone posture since trailing arbutus is a prostrate shrub.
