Elliottia racemosa, is also known as Georgia plume and it was seen there and collected by William Bartram along with Gordonia, and Frankliana, but he didn't mention Elliottia and his specimen was not found until the entire collection he sent to Dr. John Fothergill was finally unpacked decades later after much of what was in the collection got rediscovered and named by others. Interestingly elliottia is in the same family as the blueberry genus Vaccinium. Unfortunately Elliottia in may only be marginally hardy in zone 7. It is apparently a rare endemic to Georgia where it is state listed as threatened. A couple of reports from South Carolina are believed to be have resulted from persisting transplanted specimens even though it is rather difficult to transplant.
