Buckwheat-tree, Cliftonia monophylla, also known as black titi is in a monotypic genus in the same family as titi, Cyrilla racemiflora, which has a similar appearance and habitat, but differ primarily in the inflorescence structure and fruit. The inflorescence of titi is a raceme as the specific epithet indicates, but the fruit of buckwheat-tree looks so much like buckwheat fruit that if the tree was more familiar than buckwheat then buckwheat might be called titi-weed instead. Another similarity is that both are valued as honey plants.
