There are two species of Clethra L., sweet pepper-bush, C. alnifolia L., and mountain sweet pepper-bush, C. acuminata Michx., which are similar enough that either one could be used in Northeast Alabama.  The lack of range overlap makes it the best key to identify them in the wild where C. alnifolia L. is mostly found near the east coast and along the coastal plain to Texas while C. acuminata Michx.is mostly found in the Southern Appalachians from Georgia to Pennsylvania although it is also reported in Alabama.  I may have seen mountain sweet pepper-bush just south of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park while I was backpacking a section of the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina.  For a native landscape Clethra L. would be the preferred choice over the invasive exotic butterflybush, Buddleja davidii Franch., especially the white flowered cultiver, since Clethra L. has similar terminal spikes of white flowers.
