Spiderflower, Cleome houteanna auct. non Schltdl., was collected by William Bartram, and it would have been named C. lupinifolia if he had gotten credit for the discovery.  Regardless it is now considered synonymous with pink queen, Cleome hassleriana Chod., and not even a native plant as Bartram thought similar to how he thought that oranges, Citrus L., were native due to becoming naturalized after being introduced by the Spanish around St. Augustine, Florida.
