I know one person who was supposedly given a female American bittersweet, Celastrus scandens, but it never set fruit perhaps due to the lack of a pollinator, and spread much more than expected. This made it appear to be a male plant of the invasive exotic Oriental bittersweet, C. orbiculatus, so it was removed and destroyed with great effort. This is a prime example for being cautious about free plants.
