Piratebush, Buckleya distichophylla, as a rare shrub found in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia where it is listed in as threatened in Tennessee but endangered in the others.  The reason it is so rare is the specific habitat requirements of full sun yet known to be parasitic on eastern hemlock, Tsuga canadensis, which typically produces a dense shade.  A couple other interesting rare species in the sandalwood family are leechbrush, Nestronia umbellula, and buffalo nut, Pyrularia pubera, both of which are found in Alabama.
