Not only is the aster family large so is the Aster genus, this has resulted in dividing genus.  The most recent division perhaps due to DNA put all our native asters in other genera.  Nine other genera in our area at least include species that have synonymous names that were within the aster genus.  The first one alphabetically by genera is climbing aster, Ampelaster carolinianus (Walter) G.L. Nesom, which is a woody scrambling shrub that was first collected by William Bartram.  The largest genus is Symphyetrichum

Nees, which includes the aster shown here.
