Hazel alder, Alnus serrulata, is one of
the best shrubs for wet areas especially since it is relatively easy to
propagate with cutting and is therefore used extensively for habitat
restoration in riparian areas. Typical
of the birch family the leaves are doubly serrate leaves and the fruiting bodies include catkins and cones with up to three stages of maturation visible at
the same time, but fall color is lacking.
